Irrational Metacritic 85+

English

Irrational Games is hiring a Design Manager, but you need to have worked on a game with an average Metacritic score of 85+ to apply for the job. Wait, what?

Everyone wants the best people to work for them. We get that. Get the best people, and you can deliver the best product. This goes for Irrational as well, but there’s a catch. One of the requirements for the role as a design manager at the studio is that you must have worked one a game with an average Metacritic score of at least 85+.

This isn’t just an extra plus on your application, if you got that covered, but it’s an actual requirement. It’s obvious why Irrational demands this. The studio is known for several praised games, and of the six games listed on their page of previous projects, only one game (Tribes: Vengeance) is below the required threshold with a Metacritic score of 83.

It’s not a surprise that Irrational would be looking for the most talented people, who’ve worked on succesful games, but it’s wrong to do it this way. One reason is obviously a requirement based on a Metacritic score, but that’s not the real problem. The real problem is that you can’t measure one person’s contribution to a team effort by a single score.

But enough talking, more numbers… or something. Here’s a list of games that have an average Metacritic score of 84 or below, which would mean that the people, who helped develope the games, wouldn’t be able to apply for the job at Irrational Games (unless, of course, they’ve worked on another game with an average score of 85+).

  1. Borderlands is the stand out on that list for me. It’s an original IP that is still unchallenged in its genre and it spawned four addons. FOUR!

But on the flipside, what about the people who’ve worked on 85+ Metacritic titles but only for a short period of time? Or got fired?

Putting a number on it is silly. Look at the work, not the scores.
